Let me take you back to a hot summer afternoon when I was eight years old, standing at the edge of a swimming pool, absolutely terrified of the water.
My cousins were already swimming, laughing, and calling me to jump in, but I couldn't move. I had tried once before and swallowed so much water that I promised myself I would never get back in a pool again.
But that day, my grandfather sat down beside the pool, looked at me, and said something I still remember: "Fear only feels permanent until you take the first step."
He didn't push me. He just waited. So, slowly, I sat down at the edge, put my feet in the water, and finally, after almost twenty minutes, I slid in — holding onto the side the entire time.
That was the moment everything changed. Within a month, I was swimming across the entire pool by myself.
What I learned that day wasn't really about swimming. It was that fear feels enormous right before you face it, and tiny the moment after.
And that's exactly why, whenever I feel afraid of something new today, I think back to that pool, take a breath, and take the first step anyway.
